Weekend in New York

The following Friday evening when Stephen arrived home sore from his work out, Travis met him at the door with two packed bags.

“Where are you going? Are you going home? Why are you packed?” He tried to keep the edge of panic out of his voice as he ran through all the emergency situations that would require one of them to immediately go home.

“Relax, Stevie.” Travis handed him one of the bags. Stephen recognized it as his.

“Wait. Why did you pack my bag?”

“We’re going to New York for the weekend.”

“What? I don’t want to go to New York.”

“Well I do,” Travis said. “It’s been a hell of a week, and I need to get out of town and have some fun.”

“But where are we going to get the money to go to New York?” Stephen asked.

“Relax,” Travis said. “My dad sent me a load of cash this week. He was feeling generous or something. He said I should use it to put toward credit cards, but what the hell? I can always pay those off later.”

Stephen didn’t have time to react. “Fine,” he said.

“Come on. Our train leaves in half an hour, and we have to get down to Back Bay Station.”

They made it to the train station, Travis galloping out ahead of Stephen and urging him on. Stephen’s sore muscles ached under even the light weight of his backpack full of clothes. But once they were on the train, he relaxed and fell into a deep sleep that lasted the entire ride to New York.

When they arrived at Penn Station, Travis dragged them from the train to the hotel for a brief stop to check in, and then almost immediately out. It was Stephen’s first time in the city, but Travis had been there several times throughout his college days. They stayed in Chelsea, hitting all the shiny bars and clubs Travis had hit during his school years—Therapy, The G Lounge, even Flaming Saddles, the gay country and western bar.

The first night, Travis and Stephen made their way to one of the bigger clubs that was having a gay night. But despite the night’s label, it seemed like almost a quarter of the people there were straight women. Stephen watched the crowd gather around his friend. He smiled to himself and took a sip of his beer, placing it back down on the sticky railing he had been leaning on for the last forty-five minutes.

Another group of college girls tried to dance with him. They had made their way up to the box he was dancing on and surrounded him, waving their arms in the air and trying to grind to the Hex Hector dance mix the DJ was spinning. One of them had even tried to jump up on the box and dance with him. You could hardly blame her. Travis was young, and he was in excellent shape. He had his shirt off, and his skin gleamed in the strobe lights as he moved gracefully to the rhythm of the music.
